Project Overview
The Aberdeen Science Teaching Hub is a state-of-the-art facility centralising undergraduate teaching laboratories and multidisciplinary research spaces, including Chemistry, Geoscience, and Life Sciences. Designed by Reiach and Hall, with structural engineering by Fairhurst, the project replaced ageing, dispersed laboratories with a modern, flexible facility that encourages collaboration across disciplines.
Stephenson Group Contribution
Stephenson Group delivered the Precast Ground Floor Planks and 3-Storey Post-Tensioned RC Frame, forming the backbone of the building. This work provided:
Structural strength to support multiple laboratory floors
Vibration control and temperature stability for sensitive scientific equipment
Efficient, precise construction that enabled timely delivery
Our specialist expertise ensured the building met the high technical standards required for laboratory teaching and research.
Award-Winning Design
The project was recognised by the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) with a 2024 Award. Key reasons for the award include:
Innovative Activity-Led Design: Facilities organised around the activities in the labs rather than traditional departmental divisions, encouraging shared use and cross-disciplinary collaboration
Technical Excellence: Robust concrete structure, vibration mitigation, and temperature stability
User Experience: Breakout spaces, full-height glazing, and visual connectivity between spaces
Contextual Sensitivity: Thoughtful materials and massing integrated the building into the historic Old Aberdeen conservation area
Stephenson Group’s structural work was critical in achieving the technical standards that supported this award-winning design.
